I have only stayed on Soi's 11 and 13 across 4 visits to BKK, so my response is based on the food available there.
On my first visit, at check-in, I was encouraged by the hotel staff to try the street food along Soi 11. They reassured me it was fine. So I went for it. And to date I have had no issues at all.
I guess given the reliance on tourists in that particular area the food must be made to a certain standard to ensure no loss of revenue for the hoteliers as well as local businesses.
As a result every chance I get I eat as the locals do. Watching a group of locals mass around a particular stall is a good sign. -
I thought Australian Passport holders were exempt from 30 days tourist visa.
Same here

Heading to Vietnam and Cambodia this November.
-
Stayed at Grand Swiss twice and stayed at Citrus 13 on Soi 13 going on 3 times now, same hotel group for both of these, very good price for what you get.
-

why would you. -
I'm there in July as well.
Yes I saw freelancers all around soi 6, there's one out the front of Boots chemist. And plenty of other opportunities down Am plaza, massage alley. Oh and Climax nightclub.
FL's at Nana hotel soi 6, also Thermae on Suk.

Double one is inexpensive and looks clean and good.
I didn't think Double One had a pool though, the OP mentioned a pool as a requirement

I thought this was an urban myth but turns out it's real...
Was having dinner with a BM and two Isaan gals on my last trip, watched these ladies scarf a plate of Isaan style stir fried vegetables with chili.
Oh and did I mention chili? Me and my buddy took a bite each and I was like Fuck that!. These two broads finished the entire plate, afterwards even they have their heads down for count, panting, with serious mouth burn. Anyway, I must have forgotten about the dish, because later when she's giving me a BBBJ...man that shit burnt my knob end. :P :D
It messed me up so much so that the next day I had trouble knocking one out with a masseuse, I got there eventually, but that shit just fucken hurt too much to enjoy. :o
Beware the chili.
