  1. The listings could be more comprehensive. The hotel I'm in now and the hotel I'm moving to tomorrow are both guest friendly, but neither are listed as far as I can tell. Furama Exclusive Sathorn and Asoke Residence.
  2. I'll be in Bangkok in a few days and want to get some major dental work done. I've seen the websites that tout to US clients, but they seem expensive by Thai standards. Does anyone have any recommendations for a dentist that does implants or similar?
  3. When you book you hotel, choose two occupants when possible.
  4. A few years ago I stayed at the FuramaXclusive a few blocks from Patpong between Silom and Sathorn. It was girl friendly. Breakfast was fine. Staff was accomodating. Easy access to transport. Good taxi card (I'm looking at it now). Might see you there, might go to Suhkumvit though, don't know, but FuramaX is definitely on my list. Yahoo Travel can fly me there and give a room & breakfast for 3 weeks for under $3k US.
  5. He's a spammer. Check (not click) the link at the bottom of his posts.
  6. No. Just street vendors selling regular stuff. You can buy everything from underwear to cars from street vendors. There's plenty of info here and elsewhere about the girls. My first girl was at a place called Takara in Patpong. It's a massage parlor, so no barfine. A fishbowl of sorts, pick a girl, make a deal (I said 2000 LT, she wanted more, I stayed at 2000, she smiled and said OK) pay and go. Ignore the touts at the bottom of the stairs; they'll grab your arm and pretend that they brought you there for a commission, just tell mamasan "no tout" or "no guide" or something so that she knows that you came by yourself. There are maps of Patpong, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy in many places, perhaps here, but google: patpong map or Nana map... MBK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MBK_Center Erawan Museum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erawan_Museum Silom is a neighborhood on Silom Rd., sometimes referred to as the Silom/Sathorn or Bangrak neighborhood. It's very close to Lumpini Park. The BTS runs overhead on Silom. On Sukhumvit, near Nana Plaza, I felt that I had to keep my guard up, for good reason. Near Soi Cowboy not so much, but even less on Silom. If you can, download a taxi card from your hotel's website. Even better if it's got Thai instructions. Use it at the airport to get to your hotel and mamasan may ask for it too, but you should get a taxi card at hotel check in too.
  7. I've stayed at FuramaX, Darjelling, On8 & Kingston. FuramaX was the best. Kingston the only one I won't go back to. Darjelling is a boutique hotel very close to Soi Cowboy. On8 is right at Sukhumvit and Soi 8. The FuramaX I stayed at was near Patpong, but I'm sure the other two FuramaX's are decent. As a noob, I appreciated the Silom neighborhood. It was less tourist oriented, more business class people, but still had the action nearby. The BTS and MRT are easy to navigate and can get you to Sukhumkit in a few minutes, but Patpong kept me busy for a couple of weeks, so I didn't see Sukhumvit until my second trip. If you get tempted to buy on the street, remember that you can get the same things for less at MBK and in air conditioned comfort. BTS will get you there. Take a trip to the Erawan Museum, I took a LT BF the next morning... If you pick the right LT, she'll show you around. On the other hand the wrong one will try to break into your room safe while you go for condoms (make sure you have a good safe). Walking is an option when you're spending weeks, but with less time, the motorcycle taxis are a convenient option, they're everywhere. Not for the feint of heart, though (you'll understand once you see Bangkok traffic). Tuk Tuk's are more often traps to lure you to places that you don't want to go, not always though.
  8. It's a good distance from Sukhumvit and the touts at the suit store near Suk don't remember that they just hit you up 5 times the day before and the day before that and the day before that... About the same distance to the water taxi in the other direction (It'll take you to MBK and it's something different. Take small change and jump on quickly, it doesn't stop for very long). My bed was like a huge rock, I won't go back because of this (I had them add a comforter on top of the mattress, which was a slight help). I've posted some pics either here or at PattayaAddicts. There's a taxi stand outside and to the left. Say hi to Meaw for me (took her to Siam Ocean World), she's the tall cute one. Mook, in the restaurant, has a fun way about her too. If you find it doesn't suit you either, On8 is owned by the same company and you might be able to switch. Both are non-smoking, though. I'll repeat that's it's girl friendly.

  10. You guys know he's just spamming the board for http://www.cheapairlines.com/ ?
  11. Everything that you've heard about Bangkok is a myth. It's an elaborate hoax. Come on, if such a place existed, do you think we'd share that knowledge with everybody? No way. We'd keep it for ourselves--more for me, as the say it. If you're anywhere near Salt Lake City, in the US, you might give it a try.

  13. Speaking of Delta I arrived in tact with luggage. Even got home in one piece. Delta uses 747's for their overseas Asian routes. 747's that have not been upgraded. Cattle cars with movie screens. None of the seat back lcd's, so if you're lucky there will only be a few heads between you and the movie selected for you to watch. I flew American on the first trip and they had the lcd's. Both trips have changed flights in Japan. To and from Japan/BKK had lcd's on both trips. Only the Delta leg did not provide lcd's. Delta is planning to upgrade in 5 years, until then flying Delta across the ocean is like a trip back in time to 1980.
  14. If you are not married to being close to NEP, but would consider being a block from Soi Cowboy, try Darjelling. The Skytrain will take you to NEP or hop on a taxi bike. There is more info in the Darjelling topic in this thread and elsewhere in the forum.
  15. Nice pics. It's good to see some life outside the city limits. Irfanview is a free program that's easy to use and will downsize those pics to a more web friendly size. These pics probably took 15 minutes to upload because of their file size (the last one is 3.5MB). A few clicks in Irfanview can get you 800x600 resolution and a filesize closer to 100KB. The forum software downsizes the view to about 800x600 anyway, but stores the fullsized image...All you lose is some upload time when you transfer them over the internet if you save as a new image (don't use same filename). I've been using it for 12 years. GIMP is a free program for major overhauls to image files; it's not so simple, but you could possibly make that bull walk using GIMP. http://www.irfanview.com/
  16. Sorry about the quality. It was my first time trying to photo document a hotel room. The picture of the bed and the TV were taken from approximately the same area in the middle of the room. The picture of the window also gives an indication of how large the room is. Only one bathroom picture was in focus and it's poor.
  17. Not noisy from the road. Noisy from the construction next door. My floor had no rooms on the Suk Rd. side. Travelocity had a good rate 20 days ago when I booked it. 1 Adult Save 30%+Free BFST for 2 and in-room internet Details: 1 Room , 8 Nights ,1 Adult Total for 1 Room: $ 311.84
  18. I got to visit this hotel for a week after the electricity quit in a sister hotel and a curfew had been announced. When the A/C stopped blowing I went outside for a smoke and to see some of the turmoil up close. When I returned to the hotel I found it empty, I was the last to get transported to the new digs. Kingston is new. It also seems to be unfinished. There is still construction dirt on my 5th story window. There is light showing through the door to the hallway, no trim or something. And the drain in the shower doesn't seem capable of keeping up with the incoming flow of water. The biggest tell is the rock hard bed. This bed is not 4 star. I had the maids add an additional comforter to sleep atop, but my shoulders still go numb when I sleep on my sides. The room is spacious. Light switches on both sides of the bed. Good room safe. Pretty nice bathroom, but the one I left behind at Darjelling was better. Fridge is inadequate and completely filled with room bar stock. No wall art makes the room a little Spartan, which contrasts the Venetian style. Staff is very helpful and plentiful. After some polishing and new mattresses this may be a good hotel. If the price is right give, it a try in a few months. I'll add pics later.
  19. Entirely non smoking. Staff was quite distracted. Had to threaten them with a bad review to get their attention. It might have just been my tone that got them focused on my issues because their English was below average. I wasn't happy about the lack of a window, but the room was cozy and well appointed. The bathroom was incredible, but didn't have the toilet spray nozzle. Lots of TV channels. Decent soaps and accessories for the room. Better quality room safe. Even better--during the crack down on the Red Shirts, the hotel lost electricity and the government announced a curfew, so they moved us. I guess there were about 20 of us in the hotel who were transferred to the Kingston on Soi 15. Bigger, better room. Location not as good, but since there is a curfew tonight, location is not an issue. If not for the no smoking policy, Nana location and the understandable distraction of the staff, I'd stay again. If location is utmost on your list, Darjelling tops On8, but the rooms are not as nice.
  20. Poppa Palace Take a pass. The basics of a decent hotel are here, but the bait and switch tactics made my stay disappointing. Bills itself as luxury; at best it's a Budget Inn. I've stayed in 5 hotels in Thailand, this is the only one with a 19 inch cathode ray tube TV. Only one that charges for internet. Only one that the A/C won't cool the room. If you are a non-smoker, this hotel is for you; there are zero smoking allowed rooms, none. The bathrooms come with soap/shampoo--in industrial dispensers, not individual containers. I studied long and hard on the hotels that I chose for this trip. I know I picked a smoking room, I've smoked for 35 years, it's not like I forgot. I also chose a hotel with free internet. Since I don't have internet, I can't check on what the advertisement said about the TV, but CRT is not luxury, it's 20th century tech. Poor A/C is not luxury. My room is actually warmer now, after sunset, than it was a hour ago. Bed is hard; better than a tile floor, but I've walked on softer carpets. Little bugs appeared on the second day. I booked online and did a simulated purchase to see the final paperwork. I noticed that although I had chosen 2 adults in the room, that had revertedto 1 because I didn't include a second adult's name. When I wrote "other Traveler" in, a second adult was included. When I addressed these issues with the front desk, before I'd even finished I got the tired line that I booked though an agency so blame them. The clerk acted like they've had these complaints often. Which indicates to me that they are deliberately delivering incorrect information to their agencies. The room is decent sized and fairly clean. And I did manage to get a second key to keep the A/C running while I'm out with only a 200 baht deposit (no receipt). Location is good, reasonably close to the beach and nightlife. Plenty of towells, no wash cloths. Seems to cater to Russians. Breakfast buffet is adequate to sparse, looks like lunch, but across the room you'll find eggs, toast, a few fresh fruits, juice and cereal. If you have low self esteem and disappointment is a vital part of your daily life, choose this hotel. This hotel is OCD about extra charges. My room even included a list of 45 items that would be charged for if damaged or missing.
  21. Haven't seen any funny hats, but I'll put mine on tomorrow. Watch out for the street vendors---asked one for pad Thai, got chicken on a stick. I could see the chicken, but was hoping that the noodles might be out of sight. No such luck. Showed him two 1000 baht notes before ordering to ensure he could make change. He took one and said OK. I got a chuckle out of that. I started to feel annoyed on the 3rd mishap, when my change as 10 baht shy. Spent that 10 on corn fritters at the next stand to substitute for noodles. Finger lickin good!
  22. Checked in last night. Desk girl seemed new to the job. Couldn't find my reservation because it was after midnight and she didn't look for yesterday's reservations. Took quite a while to get out of the lobby. The room is everything I expected although you have to request a second room key to keep the A/C running while out of the room. Location is hard to find, but simple to reach. After turning on Soi 18 make an immediate right into what appears to be a private parking lot. If you pass the Pavilion Indian restaurant, you've gone too far and it's the first thing on the soi. Go to the end and the hotel is just around the corner. Soi Cowboy is 1 short block away across Sukhumkit. The hotel gave me two breakfast vouchers. My BF was reluctant to use hers, but eventually did. Good breakfast for a cheap hotel.
  23. I can't tell you what the conditions are now, but in two weeks when I get there I can. I'm spending three days in BKK, then three more in Phuket and the bulk is unreserved, but as of now, it's going to be in BKK. There are 15,000,000 people in Bangkok. The odds of me being a casualty are pretty slim as long as I don't wear red or go to where the action is. Unfortunately I've got a friend near Silom, so I might venture near some of the action, if it's still going on. I'm not worried though.
  24. Isn't Anchorage like the warmest spot in Alaska because of the ocean current and mountain wall or sitting atop a volcano or something? Good thing I don't run a airline... Denver! United sent me there and stranded me for two days, letting 7 flights to my destination leave without me because I was involuntarily bumped in Tulsa for someone who paid more for my seat. I have a motto: Never fly United. I hate that airport--every five minutes the intercom says not to leave your luggage or the TSA will steal it. Thanks for the good wishes.
  25. Thanks for the suggestions. I booked on Delta. They'll get me there with little hassle (I hope; they are American, so they may turn the plane around because someone farts).
