  1. Is it your first trip to Bangkok? If you are on business or first class, you will have the pass to go thought the fast track. If you are handicapped, you could not make that 10 minutes walk. You could ask for a wheel chair, it takes a little longer but you still no need to walk. Just to make sure you won't waste your money on something you don't need.

By no means first trip. However EVA has never offered a pass for fast track when flying their business class. I will be inquiring about this for my next trip though. Seems I have been getting short end of the stick for some reason.

Wow! I guess different people travel differently. Travel in coach, pay for fast track, and pick up by a limo!

I am 6' 3" so coach is not an option. Last trip while pretending to be poor (see end of my TR for details) I flew coach from BKK to Phuket. It was absolute torture as my knees were firmly embedded into the seatback in front of me. I had booked round trip but ended up buying new tickets on Thai in Royal Silk for our return flight to BKK.

  2. Don't be funny, if it wasn't for you saying about this I'd have never have even thought about it let alone be considering it.

I'm thinking about a carryon for my week away and taking advantage of this on my next trip.

Really after a long 15 hours of travel it takes what feels like an age to get from one end to the other.

Thanks, 15 hours is rough but it's 24-26 hours from my home to BKK.  :P

This is why I am considering this as standing in a queue after that is torture.  :P

  3. I believe this is a case of each to their own.

I personally do not mind waiting for my bags but I hate waiting in line. It just make me feel fidgety and horrible so I know I'd personally enjoy taking advantage of something like this.

But I do not think it's for everyone.

Like many people have said many times on other posts, it's your trip so enjoy what you choose to do.

Thanks, yes standing in a line is a real bore. That is one reason I do not fly coach.

for 850 baht to me is worth it just in case land with other planes... specially a plane full of  Chinese ...

Also I only travel with carry on so I out of the airport and into an Uber very quickly

Agreed, I fly EVA until Thai comes back to the USA. Landing at the same time as a plane full of mainlanders is a horror show. With backpackers a close second as they always delay flights with their small car sized backpacks they try to bring aboard. They don't check bags at the counter like the rest of us. They are overweight so a sly gate check is the only way to avoid the fee at the discomfort of those that followed procedure.

Thanks again and my apologies for broaching the subject. I simply wanted to know if anyone had actually used the service. (Thanks Collectskulls) Was not really wanting a debate on whether someone deemed it of value.

That one worked great for me coming in high season ...

    https://www.limousine.in.th/fast-track-immigration.html

That one never bothered showing up and took almost 2 weeks to get a refund and many phone calls and emails ...

Thank you. Looking at BFS now.

took me about 15 minutes to get through immigration on my last trip to bangkok

the one before that i was the only person in line when i walked up

is that worth $100?  your time must be very valuable

I have yet to land in a line for less than 15 minutes and I prefer to not wait in lines when there is an option. Yes, my time is quite valuable to me.

  5. Has anyone tried this yet? It's less than 100 USD and you get a cart ride from the gate to special fast track immigration area. If there are no negative responses or if no one has tried I will report back after next trip. I am keen to try it as I am using their car service already.

  6. I always get the shits after eating with bargirls, but i do it anyway. the thing that always does it is somtam, i suspect it's from the old wooden bowls soaked in nam pla, fish sauce. Stick with fried food, soups and fresh fruits.  If you're only in BKK and Pattaya, there's lots of western food available. Food safety is pretty good in Thailand compared to most other asian countries.

Are these Isaan girls by any chance? If you are eating Som Tam Isaan style with the pickled crab and fermented fish sauce? That may be the issue. I can see where some could have a problem there.

  7. I have never been ill from street carts nor local Thai restaurants. I absolutely adore the fermented (left hanging, open air, two days before cooking) Isaan sausages and even those have failed to cause issue. The only time I got sick was when I ate in a commercial establishment at the mall. In fact both I and my Thai companion got the trots.

The only caveat is I have been eating true SE Asian food since I was quite young. I hope someone else can advise on the sensitive stomach issue as I am of no help with that.

The street carts and market vendors for the most part are self-employed. They have pride in what they produce and I imagine understand that if they sell bad food they risk losing business and more importantly face.

  8. I am suffering a severe hangover after last trip. TR may be coming, unsure yet as I must eat crow to post it.

However to alleviate one of the longings from my trips I broke down and made Sai Ua today.

It helped a bit to alleviate one of my longings for the street food.

Tomorrow will I will make Moo Ping to hopefully further satiate

my longing for street cart goodies.

  9. Perhaps it will work with a US bank account. I am making the same move in just over a year now and was advised to have a Thai bank account to avoid any issues. If you find out different I would keen to hear of your experience.

  10. How to Obtain a Retirement visa in Thailand:

    STEP 1: OBTAIN A NON-IMMIGRANT visa
    Requirements:

    • Passport (at least one year remaining before expiration)
    • You must be holding nationality or permanent residence of the country of application
    • Proof of Funds

    STEP 2: OBTAIN A ONE-YEAR RETIREMENT visa
    Requirements:

    • Must be 50 years old and above
    • Passport (signed copies of each page)
    • Non-Immigrant visa
    • Departure Card TM.6
    • Proof of meeting Financial Requirements
    • Thai Bank Book (original)
    • Letter from your Thai Bank
    • Three(3) 4×5 cm photos, with full face taken

    STEP 3: OBTAINING A RE-ENTRY PERMIT

Most people misunderstand the different concepts of “Extension of Stay” and “Re-entry Permit”. Sometimes mistaken for each other, you must understand that these are two different things, both of which you would need during your stay.

The Extension of Stay is simply the controlling date. Everything else is dependent on this. Everything is invalidated when your Extension of Stay expires. On the other hand, the Re-entry Permit’s validity is subject to the validity of your Extension of Stay. However, leaving Thailand without a re-entry permit automatically invalidates your extension of stay.

STEP 4: REPORTING YOUR STAY EVERY 90 DAYS and visa EXPIRATION

You are required to report to the Immigration Police every 90 days if you are on a long term extension of stay. Persons holding a multiple entry visa will simply depart Thailand and renew their extension of stay after each 90 day entry.

If you cannot obtain your extension inside Thailand, you will have to get a new non-immigrant visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad.

Meeting the Financial Requirements for a Retirement Visa:

    Financial Requirements are as follows:

    • Bank Account showing THB 800,000
    • Monthly income of at least THB 65,000
    • Combination (Bank Account + Income x 12 = THB 800,000)
  11. I thought I liked spicy food.  Then I went to Thailand.

Yes, it's delicious, fresh, inexpensive, authentic, fun, and memorable.  I found that even when I let them know I only wanted 'medium spice' that was too much.  I felt like a pussy doing it, but asking for low spice was more enjoyable for me.

So good though.  I don't regret one bite of it.

    That's true for many.

I had a Mexican girl I played with while I lived in Kalifornia. We ate at all her favorite dives to get the authentic as much as possible. She always told me how she loved spicy food until we went to my favorite Thai restaurant. I ordered my Thai hot (phet mak mak) and she followed suit so sure she knew what spicy meant. I tried to persuade her to back it down a bit as we had eaten together enough, I knew what she considered spicy truly was not. When our food arrived and we began to eat she did her best but the tears and beads of sweat on her brow gave her away. after just three bites.

  12. Silly question, but is it easy to cut through soi 2 to soi 4 where the action is, and how easy? is there like multiple ways or just 1 particular way?

Dumb I know, I even tried google earthing it but could it get anything definitive.

From front door of Majestic Grande walk across Soi 2 past Annies into Rajah parking lot. This lot borders Soi 2 and 4. It is a direct shot from door to 4.

  13. I'll be in BKK from May 19 - Jun 1, staying on Soi Ruam Ruedi (near Phloem Chit BTS).

If I arrive after 9pm do you think a taxi is the fastest way to get to the hotel? Or should I take the train?

The train is not bad but does take about the same or slightly less time as taxi or limo dependant on traffic. Depending on distance from bts station and amount of luggage the value can not be beat. However it is currently ungodly hot so if comfort factors in take a taxi.
  14.

Had a fantastic feast at Ton-Thong restaurant. Highly recommended if you want a true Thai dining experience. It is a bit of a haul but taxi was less than 100 baht for us. We ordered 6 mains of seafood, one of them a huge Isaan Som Tam Tad spread. We had various appetizers, fried shrimp cakes the size of tennis balls, dried then fried pork and the spring rolls. All was outstanding and service was impecable. Total bill was only 1280 baht

Markets, small family run restaurants and street food is the most enticing for me.

I always run for the stick meats when I hit the ground.

Do not be afraid to try whatever you see that looks appetizing. If you do not like it try something else. No one can tell you what is "the best" as tastes are subjective and entirely personal. I like my food truly Thai spicy and even eat bugs after my last trip. I had Isaan Som tam last trip and had tears in the corner of my eyes. I loved every minute of it even if slightly masochistic.

So go forth and just wander about the many markets and enjoy yourself and always remember to smile!
