  1. I have always stayed at Majestic Suites except one time. Way back in 2008, my buddy convinced me to stay for couple of days on phetchaburi road, can't remember the hotel name which was amistake. We had to smuggle a girl in, as the security was very strict. I like the Nana area due to action and thai food availability

I think the thread is discussing living on a more permanent basis due to work, retirement and not on holiday.

  2. Looking at both of these options for a family of 3 - wife, daughter and myself.  4 days when we arrive and we come back to Bangkok later.

The marriott I am talking about is the one with the roof top bar.  This is quite an attraction to me but the wife would not be interested as she likes to stay in.  Daughter would come up with me if allowed.   The pool however which is another factor is quite small at the Marriott.

Hilton is also same location and is very new.     Rooftop swimming pool which is bigger than Marriott and this comes in over 4 days at £50.00 cheaper.

    Anyone recommend either?

Just FYI, the Marriott with the roof top bar is not a JW.

  3. I am very curious if anyone has done a year or more of education with a visa in Thailand and if they used a GI Bill. If they have I would just like to know how difficult of a process it was and if there were any restrictions.

I am trying to find somewhere to take courses for a year out of the US and would prefer one of the cheaper Asian countries e.g. Thailand, Philippines.

All information is useful thank you.

I was on an ED visa for 6 months. Not sure if it'll help?

  4. Songkran is quickly approaching. Never been there during that before. Are people basically splashing you wherever you go? So if I jump off the MRT to go to my hotel just across the street, I can expect myself and my baggage to be soaked no matter what?

Or is the craziness mostly limited to areas where people typically gather, such as outside bars and such?

It's basically everywhere except in the BTS and indoors. And it usually slowly calms down once the sun goes down. Except for the bar/entertainment/clubs area where from my personal experience, I have been shot with water guns walking from soi 2 to soi 4 around 8pm.

But if you look like you have somewhere important to go (wearing a suit), or with children (baby stroller) or like you said dragging luggage then maybe they will not splash you with water.

But then again I can't be sure. No one can. This is thailand after all.

Another option would be to just take a cab from the airport directly to your hotel.

  5. I usually stay right near Nana plaza but I wanted to change it up a bit.  I usually stay pay about $75 a night and would like keep that at my max.   Is there another area in Bangkok anyone stayed that really liked it?  It Doesn't need to be near the "action" but it would be nice if it was on the BTS route.

I enjoyed Chinatown last time I was there so that would be an option...I just feel BKK has so much to offer I would like to see some other parts of the city.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Not near the BTS but near the MRT route: try staying in Ratchada. It is a lot more local than Sukhumvit and has plenty to offer. From the huai kwang night market to major malls just as Central Rama 9 and Esplanade as well as some mongering action in the form of the huge soapy massage parlours such as Emmanuelle, Posideon and The Lord.

You could also try staying at On Nut. Plenty of street food and massages everywhere and all at local thai prices.

  6. Tuktuks are right bastards. I would just avoid them unless u have a Thai gf/companion with you. Tried getting me to pay 300B to go from terminal 21 to queen park plaza yes I laughed in his face.

Yeah they are a ripoff unless you know how to take one, and they are more for the uniqueness and experience more than anything else. To be fair though, in the more local areas, they usually do charge local prices and rarely rip you off.

  7. This "cell phone card" sounds interesting. Is this like a wifi "dongle" (portable wifi?). Ive always been hesitant to use my mobile except for in hotel (or restaurant etc) wifi spots. Now that I have downloaded the Line App, a prepaid portable wifi access would seem the perfect choice to be able to make calls as well???

If so - thanks for the idea!

Pretty sure he just means Thai SIM Card.

  8. What are the fares like and is there a maximum distance they will cover? More importantly, are they safe?

    do you mean motocycle taxis?

If yes then fares typically start from 10 - 20 baht and then range to 150 and above. If you are a farang, be prepared to be quoted 50% or even 100% more than what the cost would be. For example I took a motosai taxi from Nana to Sukhumvit Soi 11 and paid 40 baht (which is already quite expensive, but given its in a tourist area), but have overheard other motosai taxi's charging 150 baht for the same distance. However, in more local districts, the price is obviously lower. For example from my condo in Rama 9 to Rama 9 MRT was 20 baht, from my condo to Nana was 80 baht, from my condo to Hwai Kwang MRT was 50 baht, and from my condo to Esplanade was 40 baht.

How I usually judge a price is 20 baht for every MRT/BTS stop. So for instance from my condo to Nana: Condo to Rama 9 MRT: 20 baht; Rama 9 to Sukhumvit is 2 stops so 40 baht, and Asoke to Nana is 1 stop so 20 baht. In total 80 baht.

There isnt a maximum distance they will cover, but they wont go super far either. And no they are not the safest mode of transportation. They are however, probably the fastest.

  9. Morning guys.

Right really need some help planning this trip. I've hit a bump in the road for my plan on going to Bangkok this year so 2018 I'm going to extend my stay. currently planning on 1 week in Hong Kong, bit of fun to unwind before i hit bangkok and then I'm planning on 4 weeks in Thailand.

So thing thing is, I'm looking at a condo or a apart-hotel type deal, I am aiming for £600-£800 max for the month, cheaper the better. I am just wondering if you guys have any suggestions.

Many condos are not going to rent out the room for just one month. For many owners, they would want a minimum of 6 months. However, you might be able to find someone who wants to sublet it out for a month.

Can't personally recommend any service apartments / apartment style hotels as I stayed in a condo.

  10. G-clubs are not for everybody. For one, they are expensive, but for two, the girls are top tier. Now whether it is worthwhile to spend time and money in one of these places depends primarily on your time horizon, the size of your wallet, and the quality of girl you are after. For short time visits G-Clubs are probably not worth the money since as you point out, immediate sexual gratification is usually not on the menu. But for expats and longer term BKK residents, G-clubs can be an excellent source for high quality girls.

1st, visit a G-Club or two, spend a couple of hours as a guest, get to know the ropes, make the acquaintance of a couple of really good looking girls, buy them drinks, and let them entertain you in house for a couple of hours as you enjoy the show. Then decide if this style of entertainment is something you might be interested in. If the answer yes, buy an annual membership at a your favorite G-Club like Pimp Club or Sherbert. I almost guarantee you that after a few visits as a member you will gain off site access to their pussies.

Excellent detailed description for those who don't know what a g-club is. It's not for me though. Too expensive, and too much time and effort needed to put in. I manage one night stands and freebies either ways so no point in signing up for an overpriced membership to maybe get some pussy.

  11. Just fly from DMK to Phuket and back for a short holiday. Took NokAir. First time flying with them and they are pretty good. They have complimentary 15kg check in luggage as well as a free small bottle of water and cupcake. Not sure exactly how much it cost, because the 'girlfriend' paid for them. But should be around 1500 ฿ for a return ticket.

  12. 29th June till early January 2017.

Taking off around 11am and landing at Suvarnabhumi at noon. Taxi to my new place of work to sort out some paperwork and then the next couple of days will be solely spent on apartment hunting as well as mongering.

Hoping to meet some BM's and I'd be more than happy to bring any beginners around.

  13. I am in the midst of trying to plan a 5 day trip to Bangkok in Jan 2015 and was just browsing some hotel prices on booking.com and thought I would give Airbnb a browse too. Was wondering if anyone here has any experience with Airbnb in Bangkok and if yes, any recommendations on specific listings? Also compared to booking a regular hotel, are there any disadvantages of booking from Airbnb?
