Men's clothes shopping bargains

Greetings lads,

I'll be in BKK for Songkran and am hoping to fill out my wardrobe.  My time is a bit short for going to a tailor, but I fit pretty well off the rack.

 

I'm looking for "stylish casual" (Cabana Wear for you Seinfeld fans) and/or "retro" (Kramer) clothes, not the t-shirts and stuff you see on the street.  Cotton, linen, muslin.  Think IslandCompany.com.  I'm an elder gent, so nothing too youthful.  I look like the Unibomber in a hoodie.  T-shirts are for accent and warmth only.  Not billboards.

 

Research points me to both Pratunam Market and/or Bo Bai market. 

 

Are these the right places for me to go?  Any other recommendations or is navigating Chatuchak worth the effort?

I've never found much for me at Pratunam (I'm 6'2"), but there is some food stuff at Chatuchak weekend market - if you are there on the weekend.

 

Chatuchak has some good hand made / craft clothing that might be what you're after.

You could try Platinum Mall (near to Pratunam) or Union Mall which both specialise in clothing.  Union Mall has some local designers with small shops as well as the more general.

MBK is also well known for clothing but may not suit you.

 

Chatuchak is worth visiting to see the whole range of goods they sell but you can only really wander and see if you find anything you like.  Pratunam is also like that and has limited shops/stalls focused on men.

 

I have never been to Bo Bai market.

i saw a youtube vidio  on bo bai, it's 8 floors,most of the stalls will sell to,but the best is this is where all the street sellers buy their stock.  so the prices are.  great. it's 10 minute taxi from mdk?

I was always intrigued by the suite sale by the tailors. I will be staying at Majestic Suites. May be I should try their suites. Has anyone bought suites from these tailors? If so how is the quality and worthiness compared to Men's warehouse?

I have bought many custom suits over the years.

 

I'm not an expert fashion hound so I rely on the tailor to guide me.

 

Labor is cheap so pick the best material you can and get a few fittings.

 

You'll get a suit much better than off the rack

It also helps to understand how much a Men's Wearhouse suit costs....

 

There are plenty of tailors that sell cheap suits, but the fabrics are terrible.  Men's wearhouse buys in bulk, so their prices are OK, but the fit will never be custom.

 

For a trustworthy tailor, look at Tailor on Ten -- -actually on Soi 8.  Great fabrics and great service.  Not the cheapest, but decent value.
