plec
Try the Ruysuk mansion http://www.udonmap.com/ruysuk/ Have stayed here before. Cheap Clean, quiet and maybe a 10 min walk away from the shopping centre and the night and day complex. Thing I was paying around 300 baht a night here earlier on this year. The Charoen hotel is decent too, I think thats about 1400 baht a night a bit more central than ruysuk. Have fun! I love Udon. Plec
Baxer
City Lodge is ok and central, only downside is no safe in the room, and because the reception is closed at nights and no guard it feels a bit unsafe to leave your stuff. http://www.udonmap.com/citylodge/
ploughman
I've stayed at Udon Hotel at 550-ish with breakfast; it's one of the old guard of former top-of-the-market hotels that have aged. Location so-so (close to lake, usually need a tuk-tuk to nightlife street). Will try to spend more quality time in Udon Thani on January trip. There's just enough of interest to farangs to avoid crashing boredom (can always see movie, hang around western bar, etc.). Not overwhelming like Pattaya or compromised by too many regular tourists. Weather is actually better during winter months but really hot & humid during summer. I can see it becoming an alternative base to Pattaya in high season for those in the know. weblo
I understand that Irish clock has now implemented a 200 baht joiner fee. Apparently they had a few problems with freelancers lightening a few wallets. So they have hired security
