Bringing prescription drugs to U.S. from Thailand

Hi All, I'm hoping for a little input...has anyone brought 6 mos+ supply of a prescription drug into the U.S. from Thailand?

I'm on a $600/mos drug for diabetes, which is $45/mos in Thailand.  I'd like to bring a 12 mos supply back and have a U.S. prescription. 

I'd prefer to declare it with CBP, and have transits thru Bali and Taipei.

Customs website says don't bring back more than 3 mos supply, but wonder if that's really enforced?

I could upgrade my insurance to cover it, but we're talking $2k+ difference all told.
