Good Restaurants in Bangkok

Recommended Posts

Next trip I would like to try some new places to eat so I would like to know your favourite eating places.

I really like seafood but I haven’t found any places with decent prices and a great selection yet. Also a good place to have breakfast.

A couple of mine are:

Harmonique, Thai food. An old wooden Thai house located in a an alley off Silom Soi 34 near the river.

Fuji, located in most large shopping centres, great Sushi. Not much atmosphere but good for a quick meal.

Thai Restaurant opposite the Siam Novotel, I can’t think of their name, it’s and old 2 storey Thai house.

Hard Rock Siam, western prices but I had a great steak last time I was there.

Gullivers, Thai food. Good pub food at a decent price.

Makaaa I too like you, enjoy great tasting seafood. But unfortunately, when it comes to fresh live seafood Bangkok prices tend to cater to tourists. There is a fave of mine, I think is close to soi 24, that is a seafood restaurant, where you choose your seafood from the tanks, they weigh it for you and cook your way, and use the sauce you prefer, steamed, fried, sauteed, sauces can be curry(green, yellow, red), spicy, oyster, XO sauce, thai fermented shrimp or fish paste, you name it they will do it.

If you have the time, a trip to Chinatown, is good and quite reasonable, not to mention the seafood is alive in tanks too. Go there for lunch and have some dimsum with your seafood and prices are cheaper than being in the touristy areas such as Emporium/Siam Paragon, or the big hotels that have chinese restaurants.

I did have an outstanding meal at the Hilton Riverside once. I can tell you the seafood was superb, and the dimsum was very tasty. The entrance has a small kiosk that sells tea of various grades and varieties. If you are a tea fancier, like I am, it is worth a visit for some rare and hard to get teas.

I think you are talking about the Seafood Market on Soi 24, has a big sign in front of it saying "If it swims, we have it". About a 7 -10 minute walk down from the Emporium. It is exactly that, a huge seafood market in which you can pick up and take home OR buy what you want and have it cooked for you in whatever style you like, and eat it there. Has a vegetable market and a wine market as well inside. Quite large and ample parking (if you live in BKK and happen to drive). Caters heavily to the Japanese, quality of the seafood is excellent and the seafood is very fresh. Is on the expensive side, but of course you can control the price by the selections you make, but if you like seafood and have esoteric tastes, not to be missed.

For a great night out with food and entertainment try Tawangdang, it's a huge place near Rama 3. Holds about 1500 people, probably 90% Thai and they are having a ball. It brews it's own beer as well, it's a German style beer hall with all sorts of entertainmnet, from singers and dancers to magicians and acrobats. The food is good as well, mainly due to the mostly Thai crowd. Most nights it's at least 80% full a swell, so always a good atmosphere.

Crepes and Co which is in SOI 12 off Sukumvit rd. It is 600yrds up the soi on the right and a real treasure. French morrocan theme and has featured a few times in the bankok post as one of the top restaurants in Bangkok. Went there 3 weeks ago with my thai GF and her two daughters where we shared 2 starters, 4 main meals and a large sweet between the girls with drinks was 25oo baht icluding a good tip. Nice place to impress the ladies.

Khagai, thank you for your input. You are spot on about Seafood Market. I know it is expensive somehow I would go there at nite with a girl but during the day, I like venturing to Chinatown in search of seafood and people watching.

An Aussie friend of mine and his Thai wife. Man can he cook. Went there with a couple of mates for a late lunch last week. Asked him to cook what he thought best. We fook me, I have never had such a meal. Ravioli filled with lobster and crab was the starter through to Wagu beef that was like butter. Not cheap but bloody good food.

Cheers,

Mark

Last time I was in bangkok a few years ago, I ate at Somboon Seafood restaurant. Big multiple story joint specialising in curry crab etc. They have a website, make sure you go to the legit place ( I think there are 4 branches) , rather than one of the similarly named eg Sombon rip off joints. Make your own way there via skytrain rather than taxi would be the safest bet I guess.

As UA53 mentioned, Tawandaeng Brewery is a great choice a for a feed and a few drinks. I recommend the crispy pork knuckle, the rainbow fire shooters and a few draught beers while enjoying the live entertainment.

wandering through Chinatown I found a little place selling live prawns from the tank, they grilled them up with garlic for me, sensational! Sorry I cant be more specific, I would have trouble finding it again myself. But as dotcom mentioned , there should be plenty of similar places.

I always enjoy heading down to lumphini food market, so much choice and very cheap , great thai food and often live entertainment on the main stage.

If your looking for something nice although both probably on the expensive side for bangkok take a look at longtable (suk soi 16, 25th floor of colomn building) and face restaurant on suk soi 38 offering thai, indian and japanese cuisine. Note smart dress is needed for either of these I'd also recommend booking rather than just turning up on the night.
