You do know you replied to a post that is over 3 years old, right?

I'v noticed you replied to a few long dead threads today. I suggest you just let the long dead threads remain dead.

Posting just to get your post count up will work against you.

    Oh sorry.

I didn't know, no. I wasn't looking at the dates of every post I replied to but I also wasn't scrolling deep down into the forums, so I didn't thinking I'd be hitting any 'dead threads'. All threads were close to the top of the page and all on page 1 of the forum. I assume they're in chronological order.

I'm also not just trying to get my post count up. I've been a member here for a few years. I just saw an email from Bangkok Addicts today, and as I will be spending some time there during my next Thai trip, thought I'd have a lazy, hang over day reading through the threads here.

I didn't think it would be an issue sending multiple messages in a single day, nor did I know it was against the rules to reply to old thread but I'll make sure I check dates of each post before I reply in future.

    Apologies for any inconvenience.

  2. Personally, I'd avoid Pattaya over Songkran. I'm sure the thought of experiencing Songkran is very exciting if you've never done it before, however, in Pattaya they drag it out for a week. All day, all night, piss wet though just becomes tedious.

If they just stuck to 3 days, and gave the water throwing a break when the sun goes down, like they used to, it'd be so much better.

I'm always learning little bits of Thai. One day i suspect i'll be able to speak and understand everything... Maybe another lifetime.

Anyone know about this interesting, derogatory pronoun : goo กู ? As in Goo rak neu. I'm not hiso and don't hang out with them, and it's self deprecating so i don't see how anyone could take offense at me referring to myself as a lowlife. I've had some interesting reactions from bargirls on the few occasions i've used it.

Anyone understand the nuances of using this 1st person pronoun?

To the western mind, an impolite first person pronoun makes no sense at all, and couldn't possibly offend anyone.

But hey, we don't use the Thai language to interact with western minds.

The word is definitely impolite and will make people confused and/or angry if you use it in the right situation.

I don't mean this in a disrespectful or patronising way at all - I saw how you took offence to another BM that adviced learning a language from prostitutes might not be the most practical - however, I would suggest that if you genuinely way to learn Thai, you'd be much better off starting with the basics and working your way from there. I highly recommend learning the alphabet too. It's hugely beneficial if you're really going to learn Thai, as Thai words written in the various ways using Roman letters is just not at all accurate.

Once you've grasped a very good level of Thai, then stray learning the slang. Especially before using words that might be offensive and you don't even know what they mean or how they should be used.

  4. Although I usually only spend a few days in BKK during my Thai trips, I really love the city but I often find myself a bit unsure of where to go and drink in the evenings.

I cannot stand Koh San Road. I loathe the place (but I am nearly 40 now). Nana area is OK but crammed with tourists and overpriced lady bars. Soi Cowboy is just Agogos etc., and I'm looking for something different.

Is there nay decent pubs or trendy bars away from these obvious tourist drinking spots? They don't need to be exclusively for Thais but somewhere that offers something different to the typical Soi 4, loud, pricey lady bar. Where do expats drink? I heard there's a few bars in Silom, is this correct? Where else is there?

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
