  1. Bangkok is a city that evokes and oozes sensuality where crime, sex and greed walk hand in hand with exotica and seduction. For fans of crime, mystery and thriller novels based on this incredible city, its fascinating people and its seedy underbelly Wednesday 17th April (from 7.30pm till late: dinner & music from 6pm) is not to be missed “Bangkok Fiction: Night of Noir”.

Many of the finest master fiction authors will meet at the iconic Checkinn99 to share their stories and sign their latest editions. They include Christopher G. Moore, Dean Barrett, James Newman, Chris Coles, Thom Locke, John Gartland, Tom Vater all of whom have a strong following of readers and fans in and out of Bangkok.

Their skillful writing, likable characters, personal experience and knowledge of the city deemed as the 'Big Mango' creates the perfect atmosphere for mystery and thrills. You will see and feel the rawness and spirit of the city and atmosphere that they read their favourite book excerpts or explain their their art. Entertainment from Music of the Heart Band

No other bar in Bangkok is known of that claims to have been operating continuously as long as Checkinn99. Originally the Copacobana or just say The Copa opened in the late 50’s and pre-dates the Vietnam R&R period having been a favourite haunt of pioneer expats, special agents, military advisors, Peace Corps and USO entertainers such as Bob Hope all whom had fond memories of this iconic night entertainment venue.

For many years – that black smoked glass steel framed front door at the end of Sukhumvit’s most foreboding alley entrance ensured that Checkinn remained strictly a word of mouth bar – allowing time to pass whilst its character and decor remained unchanged over the last 56 years.

Checkinn99 Sukhumvit rd between Sois 5&7 Directly Opposite the Landmark Hotel Table bookings for Dinner and music at 6pm recommended contact [email protected]

  2. Have caught up with quite a few of you folks now...great to meet you. If you have no other plans for Christmas eve or Christmas Day.. we are having a Christmas Dinner Buffet 24 & 25th Dec from 8pm. 1100 Baht / head includes welcome cocktail, Beer or Carafe of Wine, Sherry & Port. Over 250 Free fun Christmas Presents drawn by raffle includes over 50 Christmas snow bears (the girls will love them) and a full night of Entertainment from Music of the Heart Band (sorry they are not being raffled). Buffet will include the usual freshly shot Reindeer.... ooops sorry Turkey ChateauBriand Sea Bass with special stomach flattening Christmas Pud and negative calorie rum custard sauce etc. You will need to book at Checkinn or on [email protected] before 20Dec. I have checked prices and including drinks is quite reasonable. I will also put on 199Baht Heineken Draft Jugs for BA's identifying themselves to me on arrival. (The jug special is independent of the Dinner) See you there!

  3. Checkinn99 will hold an Super Heroes Party this Saturday night 16Jun from 8.30pm - 2am. We have decorated and made sure our staff have practiced their special powers. But please leave all Kryptonite at home as it renders our hostesses powerless.

For the night only (and for those coming in theme dress) there will Draft Heineken Jugs at 175THB until the kegs run out. Nana is round the corner - so you can terrorize the locals after.

For those that don't know Checkinn99 its worth a look in. Located on Sukhumvit Rd between Sois 5&7 directly opposite Landmark Hotel - the small alley way entrance is easy to miss - getting out of the place is much harder though.

For those who do know Checkinn..the Music of the Heart band are putting on a real surprise! Enjoy..Chris

  4. Thanks WJ! The entrance is well known to locals - but for new comers it is quite daunting. Had free flow for 3 -4 weeks.but was getting a hard time from the Mrs!. who had a different view of marketing vs freebies. Now we have 175THB jugs for those BA's who want to drink with me on a Saturday night 9-10pm .. which still has to be the cheapest in town. Thanks for the good words.. I make no pretence..its homestyle cooking and still. The Norwegians are now dominating over the Danes as their local. Hope to share a beer on a Saturday night sometime. Chris

  5. My trip is over, unfortunately, and I'm heading back to a cold and windy holland within 24 hours.

Cannot wait to get back once again.

Chris, thanks for your hospitality, nice place you have there by the way.

and Pete, who knows, we'll keep in touch.

And yes, I did have trouble later on, when certain bar-ladies asked me where my daddy was ;)

Pete... how was Hellfire? there was a lot of press this year.. should be on the mandatory list of things to visit - walking that short length of railway line through the overgrown cuttings... whoa you can still hear and feel the anguish.

Mike and you ... how did your assignment go? did you get what you wanted? I will watch out for it.. nice to meet you both

  6. Hi Jonny B) my bar is one that closes before 2am... the post here refers to the adventure playground of lower Sukhumvit Rd that kicks off at about midnight until the morning. Quite fun to work your way from Soi 3 up to Soi 21 just bar hopping and taking in the atmosphere. The big clubs and late night bars include Climax... a very very crowded, smokey, hot spot without many (I saw 1) fire exits in a walled-in carpark under the Ambassador Hotel in Soi 11 - but the bands wind people up - and there are plenty of singles there. Bangkok Beat in Soi 7/1 - good for live bands and parading your stuff. Bamboo bar in Soi 3 (about 100 metres on the left side away from Sukhumvit). CM2 good till about 3am under the Novatel in Siam Square. Then two corner bars in Soi Cowboy that kick on until late 3-4am sometimes. These big clubs can be costly.. but the street bars are not and stay open till dawn and they host a complete mix of people from dusky to fair, tame to wild, honest to ..... take your chances. Gorgeous to (well a brown paper bag might be handy depending on the time of night or how many drinks you have had)... if you are a first timer - better fun to go with a mate as sometimes there is safety in numbers. Good hunting.

  7. If you like late late nights - Sukhumvit from Cowboy to Nana is alive and kicking till dawn.. just the normal established bars shut after 2am - with the exceptions (above open to sparrows). Whether they are meeting Newbie tourists, freelancers bar-owners, or just decent girls all having a night out (really  ?) - you will enjoy yourself... almost back to the old reputation of the City that never Sleeps.

  8. Hi Peter..Sorry to miss you - I was not following the topic. Just sent you an sms. The Aussie flags were there from the Australians in Thailand drinks function last week. Checkinn99 is not meant to be an Aussie bar, and I am not meant to be self promoting!.... but for the weekends before and after ANAZAC day and the Wednesday 25th we will have some specials for Oz & Kiwis. I will put up the large ANZAC memorabilia board in the Alleyway. Same as last week there will be a tower or two of freeflow Heineken for any BA guys who can show their union cards (Joke)or ask for me between 9&10pm. This is carried forward punishment for shameless self promotion last fortnight. Don't go for the Coopers or VB bottles (too expensive!) :D

  9. Hi tequil.. having promised Bryan that I will transfer money this weekend for an advert in BA so I wont get banned for self promotion.. the Midget left about 7 years ago due to bad health. There is a picture of him next to the bar in his Mexican hat. Music of the Heart are still there and are now doing cabaret style entertainment... steaks are still going strong. If you are in on a Sat or Sun night - please ask for Chris and i will buy you a beer. Mon - Fri I work in Vietnam.,
