  1. By no means first trip. However EVA has never offered a pass for fast track when flying their business class. I will be inquiring about this for my next trip though. Seems I have been getting short end of the stick for some reason.

I am 6' 3" so coach is not an option. Last trip while pretending to be poor (see end of my TR for details) I flew coach from BKK to Phuket. It was absolute torture as my knees were firmly embedded into the seatback in front of me. I had booked round trip but ended up buying new tickets on Thai in Royal Silk for our return flight to BKK.

I did fly with EVA a few times and got fast track services. If you don't get it this time, please let's us know why. Discount business ticket?! May be member tier is not high enough?!

My post (#18) was response to post number 17. Anyway, the picture you posted was kind of shocking! I don't mean your feet!  :D A person claimed he doesn't fly coach (you did at least once, to Phuket). Don't you have a better business class photo? I can't believe Thai Airways still using that kind of aircraft! Was it an old 747? Luckily they only use it on some short route. For a 2 hours flight, it was just OK. Have you been in their new Royal First before? It was great. I asked my friend to join me to have dinner. The table could be moved to the middle. We were eating and talking face to face. It seems Thai Royal first is way better than Silk. Thanks for the info.

  2. Thanks, yes standing in a line is a real bore. That is one reason I do not fly coach

Is it your first trip to Bangkok? If you are on business or first class, you will have the pass to go thought the fast track. If you are handicapped, you could not make that 10 minutes walk. You could ask for a wheel chair, it takes a little longer but you still no need to walk. Just to make sure you won't waste your money on something you don't need.

  3.  I have yet to land in a line for less than 15 minutes and I prefer to not wait in lines when there is an option. Yes, my time is quite valuable to me.

If you time is quite valuable to you, don't check in any bags. Only take your hand carry. Otherwise, you will not wait in line at immigration but will be waiting for you bags with other passengers.

  4. Travel in business class with most of the airlines, the flight attendants would give you a pass for that but you need to walk. If on business class with Thai Airways, just use the boarding pass. If you travel on first class, a cart will be waiting for you to take you there. If you have check in bags, even you fast track thought immigration, you still need to wait for you bags like the other passengers travel in economy class. So, it just depends if you want to spend that money for not having a 10 minutes walk.

  5. Does anyone have a guess on what the chances are to get upgraded at the Sofitel if I am a first time customer booking the lowest class of room that they offer? I'm pretty sure it is zero, but I thought I would ask.

I apologize for straying a bit from the original topic.

I would say it depends. If you only stay a couple nights and you ask nicely. You check in late in the evening. The hotel is half full or half empty. The person who check you in is a supervisor or have the authority to upgrade you. The hotel could not save the rooms and sell them tomorrow. It will be a waste anyway. He or she may let you to have a nicer room.

  6. Yes the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is the one I was talking about.

I usually get upgraded to the Grande Suite or Luxury Suite there.

The Theme suites are above them so booking a Suite I wonder if I would be upgraded to one, I am happy to book the cheapest room though and spend the money saved on other activities.

I am also Diamond with Hilton through a status match but the SPG properties are just so convenient in BKK and here at home too, plus it is fairly easy to get Platinum with SPG bouncing between the properties or booking multiple rooms.

The Jacuzzi at Sofitel looks good.

The aLoft has a large outdoor one too.

My experience, if you a gold/platinum/diamond member. Book a suite no matter which hotel chain, most of the time they will upgrade you to a better suite. If you are return guest, they will try to put you to the best suite available.

Now, reach to gold/platinum/diamond is easy. Credit cards, status match, and stay challenge will get you there. That is why I don't stay in one hotel chain. I only stay in the hotels I like or try new hotels. I have stayed in Sofitel 10+ times since they open about 4 years ago. In a few months, Park Hyatt by Ploenchit will open. I may not stay in Sofitel and will give it a try.

Just found a photo of the suite but it only shown about 2/3 of the living room.

  7. I wish Sheraton had a tub like the Sofitel, a deep tub is good for some relaxing fun  :P

But as I'm Platinum staus with SPG stay at Sheraton Grande, Westin, Four Points etc. as the benefits are very good.

I have stayed at the Sofitel a couple of times and like it except when on a low floor.

If you are talking about the Sheraton across the street, I remember they have a similar round bathtub in their suite (they called it something like Roman suite).

About the hotel benefits, I was a platinum member of SPG but not anymore. Now, I am diamond member of Hilton and platinum with Accor. Their benefits are very similar. Basically, you get free upgrade when you reach gold. Have access to the lounge even you book the cheapest room when you reach platinum/diamond.

The lower floor rooms in Sofitel are mainly used by the airlines crews or package travelers. They are not the nicest. Don't be shy to ask for a free upgrade if they put you there next time.

  8. Wow, that's pretty damn cool. Very sure that's out of my budget for now though lol

LOL, I did not pay for the imperial suite. I usually book Prestige suite and Sofitel upgrade me to their Opera suite with a indoor round bathtub (see picture below). That was the room I stayed for a few times but recently, Sofitel keep upgrading me to their best suites!

  9. Some hotels have satellite TV. You guys may be able to watch the games directly from the TV in your room. Just check the channel list. I think BT sport and astro show the games.

  10. You could get HQ or close to HQ quality and play smoothly (depends on which addon). Here is a example of this morning's GS game.

  11. Have you heard something call Kodi? If not, just google it, download it. And you could watch NBA games.

Most of the weekday games are playing early in the morning Bangkok time while you are still sleeping or having breakfast. I guess you better watch it from your computer in your hotel than watch it at restaurants or pubs. Weekend games, you may try Soi 8 Sports Pub.

  12. So far, I haven't had a taxi with that fast meter. Or I had it but didn't realize it.

Most of the time, I only take taxi to/from and hotel/airport. I know how much that would cost. I mainly use BTS or MRT to go around in town. I only take taxi if I go to some place not serviced by the two. Or I am going out with my friends or colleagues. The cost of a taxi ride may be cheaper than 3 or 4 people to take BTS or MRT.

So I guess if I finally have a taxi running that fast meter. Except the driver charge me 500 THB for a 50 THB ride, I wouldn't bother a 20 or 40 overcharge.
