exoticspirit
I had visited the Grand Palace decades ago before the MRT/BTS were even built. I plan to visit again later this year and this time I plan to beat the traffic congestion by taking the MRT to the closest station near the Grand Palace and just walk the rest of the way which I understand is not too far. I also want to visit Wat Arun right after which I missed on my last trip to Bangkok. I know one get get there from the Grand Palace area via the water with a boat or somehow stay on land with another MRT route. Which way would be better? After getting to Wat Arun, which way is better going back to Sukhumvit area (near Soi Cowboy).
Herbby
Get the BTS to Saphan Taksin, then the hop in/off boat down the river. It’s definitely the nicest way to do it and the BTS to Saphan Taksin doesn’t take long at all.

For the return trip from Wat Arun back to Sukhumvit area, would you recommend taking the reverse route by getting back on the boat, then getting on the BTS/MRT or take the land route BTS/MRT all the way back? Yes. If you use Saphan Taksin pier, there is a BTS right there. It’s a nice journey in the boat too. Sit on the top deck.

NanAtSOL
FYI, if you want to try, probably, the best cake shop in Thailand I recommend Pink Rabbit & Bob just up towards the palace. Edited June 29 by NanAtSOL

Ferry to Wat Arun and a few private tour boats. Plenty of river boats at the Wat Arun pier or near Sanam Chai station at Rajinee pier which also has canal boats. AFAIK long tail boats are mostly private hire. Would look near canal piers at the river. Reclining Buddha is at Wat Pho, next to Grand Palace. Museum Siam next to Sanam Chai station might be worth visiting for a couple of hours while you’re in the neighborhood. The Strip where Pink Rabbit & Bob is has a bunch of tourist shops and some AirCon eateries. Down the alleys towards the river are some rooftop restaurants with amazing sunset views of Wat Arun. Rongros and Chon Arun for instance. Main courses 300-500b. Food is ok…you’re paying for the view. Probably need a reservation for sunset. Mixed Thai and farang clientele. briguy
I found this article on Stickman's site called Stickman's Bangkok Tour to be incredibly helpful when planning a trip to the sites along the Chao Phraya River. Lots of details on how to get from place to place: https://www.stickmanbangkok.com/travel-in-thailand/stickmans-bangkok-tour/
JVHyatt
found a local thai who recommended taking a longboat from a local thai pier instead of the tourist piers next to wat pho. 800 baht instead of the 2-3 K the tourist piers quoted. also hailed for us a “government” tuk tuk as he called it. 20 baht set price instead of the private tuk tuk thieves. The public ferry from Tah Tian, which is right next to Wat Pho, and takes you directly to Wat Arun in less than 10 min. costs 5 baht.
