So far I have used the lounges at LHR, Bangkok, Guangzhou and Nairobi and must admit that it has been worth it. Airside restaurants can be quite expensive. Although, lounges don't offer full meals, there is some hot food plus plenty of drinks. Annual passed are well worth it if travel frequently.

What are the fares like and is there a maximum distance they will cover? More importantly, are they safe?

I just got an Annual Pass and must say it's been worth it, already used it 5 times. Gets you away from the herds and Lounges have free food and drinks. Would cost more in normal restaurants in the departure areas.
